We have a new normal. Work from home is now the “next big thing” ever since the pandemic started, highlighting to schools, companies, and other institutions that most students and employees can work even in the confines of their own homes. Some welcome the change with open arms, having adapted to it quickly. On the other hand there are those who find it a challenge to work in the non-changing environment of their homes, affecting their outlook and overall performance.

Small changes in your behavior can help you adapt to working from home, and boost your productivity. You can do this by doing the following:

1. Start eating what works for you.

What we put inside our bodies greatly affects our mood. Be more mindful with what you eat and drink and see how your body reacts to it. Some people just need a little coffee or tea to start their day, while others need a full breakfast to get the day right. When you listen and provide what your body needs, you give it the energy to fuel your day.

2. Do the hardest things first.

We have a tendency to keep ourselves motivated throughout the day when we have a sense of accomplishment. When you start and complete your hardest tasks early, the feeling of triumph will help fuel you as you work on finishing the easier, remaining tasks left.

3. Take breaks in between.

Bulldozing through your tasks may not be something you can sustain for long. Staying seated for long periods of time is also bound to create sore muscles that would cause stress for the day. Stand up from your seat and do a 3 minute stretch, water your plant, or make a new cup of coffee. When you give yourself a break in between your tasks to refresh both your body and mind, creating a balance between your mental and physical energies.  This will allow you to return to your task at hand with full energy to complete it.

4. Practice CLAYGO.

Your mood and energy are greatly affected by your surrounding and its atmosphere. Keeping things neat and organized space inside your home will help increase productivity and overall mood. When you clean as you go (CLAYGO), you keep your space clean even without too much effort. Do you have that mug of coffee that’s been on your desk since last night? Take it with you on your way to the restroom and drop it off the sink. Have a few messy items lying around? Give it a quick fix on your next break. Not only does this allow you to multitask, it also gives you an added bonus of productivity.

Challenging as it may be, we have no choice but to adapt to the world’s new normal. However, this does not mean we have to force ourselves. Sometimes all you need is a little nudge in the right direction to get the ball going.
